Dell had started this IdeaStorm site to get user feedback. The goal was to shape product direction based directly on user votes and suggestions. While not all the ideas could be followed (“$1 PC!”), one of the more useful and industry-changing ideas will soon be reality. Dell has decided to make Linux a pre-installed option on many of their consumer PCs.
This is a huge victory for everyone, even if you never use Linux. The Microsoft monopoly has been very successful at stopping all competition from being easily available. No longer. The results of this move may not be seen for years, but it will bend the shape of the entire computer industry.
