Can You Hear Me Now?

After many visits to Magnolia AV, many hours of researching, days of contemplating, I went ahead and bought a 7.1 set of Martin Logan speakers:

  • Vista (fronts, 2) : Electrostatic XStat panel, 8-in aluminum woofer, 43-23,000 Hz ±3dB
  • Cinema I (center) : Electrostatic CLS mid-range, 1-in dome tweeter, two 5¼-in woofers, 80-20,000 Hz ±3dB
  • Depth (sub) : Three 8-in aluminum subwoofers, 300W amp, 20-150 Hz ±3dB
  • Vignette (surrounds, 4) : 1½x2¼-in Advanced Thin-Film tweeter, two 4-in aluminum woofers, 78-20,000 Hz ±3dB

This set was at the upper-end of my budget (well, it went over slightly), but after doing side-by-side A/B comparisons to other speakers, I found the sound of the Martin Logans to be superior. I was even able to convince Tiff that these speakers sounded better! And the Depth sub was a manageable size, unlike some of the other refrigerator-sized subs on the market. Magnolia offers 30-day return, so if they sound like a wounded cat in a bag, I can just say ‘oops.’ The Vistas are being shipped directly from their LA location and should arrive at my house on Friday. The Cinema is backordered and should be available for pickup on June 9. Until then I have a loaner (demo unit) to use, which I will exchange for the new unit when it arrives. I was able to drive home with the Depth and three Vignettes (the fourth should be available in-store on Tuesday). Since my receiver and stand are arriving either Friday or Monday, I wanted to have everything ready to hook up about the same time.

No, still no new TV.
