The Long Wait

ATI X850
Back when I built my PC, the top-of-the-line graphics card (PCI Express) was the ATI X800. I knew the X800 was fast, but I expected a next-gen model to be released soon, so I went for the more affordable X600. So far I’ve been very happy with the X600.

Back in early December the X850 was announced and ATI began taking preorders on their web site. I decided to go for it, so I preordered the X850XTPE on December 2nd. An email received that day said “Anticipated Ship Date: 3 to 4 weeks.”

Four weeks later I called and they basically said the ‘preorders will be filled last’. I decided to continue to wait.

Now it’s been almost 10 weeks and some online retailers are starting to show stock and take orders. The X800 was almost impossible to get, so the X850 is expected to be the same; althought The Inquirer is reporting that the X850 will be easier to get than the X800.

We’ll see how soon, if ever, my preorder directly from the manufacturer gets filled.

…still waiting.
