Last week DirecTV announced some of it’s plan for local HD. The news is they are moving to MPEG-4 and will launch two satelittes this year (Q2) and two more in 2007. The two this year will carry about 600 HD channels (mostly local), while the two in 07 will acocunt for over 1000 more HD channels.
The bad news: since the new satelittes will be using MPEG-4 (currently they use MPEG-2), all receivers need to be replaced. You’ll also need a new dish each time they add satelittes.
For now I’m happy with my DirecTV, but maybe in 3-5 years I’ll be able to get IPTV .
